What is SS400 Plate?
SS400 is a hot-rolled steel grade specified under the JIS G3101 standard. The abbreviation “SS” stands for “Steel Structure,” while “400” indicates a minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa. This steel grade is composed mainly of ferrous material, along with small amounts of silicon, carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. It exhibits moderate strength and hardness, along with good plasticity and enhanced resistance to acids.
SS400 plates offer excellent tensile strength, with yield strengths ranging from 205 to 245 MPa and tensile strengths between 400 to 510 MPa. They have a hardness rating of approximately 160 Brinell and are characterized by a Young’s modulus of 190 to 210 GPa and a Poisson’s ratio of 0.26%. Due to their excellent machinability and welding characteristics, SS400 plates are used in various applications, including bridges and shipbuilding.
